Frequently asked questions

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is a cloud-hosted Windows desktop service from Microsoft. Instead of running Windows locally on a physical PC, users connect over the internet to a fully managed desktop running in Microsoft's Azure data centres. The experience is identical to a local PC but can be accessed from any device, anywhere.

Yes. AVD scales from as few as 5 users upward. It is particularly cost-effective when employees use mixed devices (Windows, Mac, iPad), work remotely, or need secure access to a consistent desktop environment. There is no large upfront hardware cost — you pay per user per month.

AVD is Microsoft's native solution and is included within certain Microsoft 365 and Windows licences, reducing third-party licensing costs. Citrix and VMware offer more advanced session management for very large deployments. For most SMEs, AVD provides equivalent functionality at a lower total cost.

Microsoft recommends a minimum of 1.5 Mbps per user for a basic AVD session, and 5–10 Mbps for a comfortable experience with multimedia content. Most modern home and office broadband connections are more than sufficient. Latency matters more than raw speed — under 150ms round-trip is ideal.

Most Windows applications run on AVD without modification, including line-of-business software, accounting packages, and CAD tools. Some applications with hardware dependencies (USB dongles, specialist peripherals) require additional configuration. Speedster IT tests all critical applications before migration.
