Should Your Business Upgrade to UniFi Network 11?

UniFi Network 11 is a major update to Ubiquiti’s network management software. It gives businesses greater device capacity, better real-time visibility, smarter internet failover and new tools for securing and troubleshooting UniFi networks. If you run UniFi equipment, our Ubiquiti experts in London can help you plan the upgrade.

For a growing London business, those improvements could mean less downtime and a much clearer picture of what is happening across the network. However, the upgrade needs more than a single click. Older hardware may not be supported, historical statistics could be affected and some of the new features require careful configuration.

In short, UniFi Network 11 looks like a worthwhile upgrade for many businesses, but it should be planned rather than rushed.

    What is UniFi Network 11?

UniFi Network 11 is the latest major version of Ubiquiti’s network management platform. It is used to configure and monitor UniFi gateways, switches, wireless access points and connected devices from one central interface.

Ubiquiti announced Network 11 on 12 October 2026 and described it as its most impactful release yet.

The update changes how much a UniFi network can handle, how administrators investigate problems and how businesses keep traffic moving when an internet connection starts to fail.

    The main changes include:

    • Around 30% more device capacity through a rebuilt telemetry engine
    • Live traffic flows showing what is happening across the network
    • Time Machine topology for reviewing recent network changes
    • WiFi WAN for using Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot as an internet connection
    • Performance-based SD-WAN routing across multiple sites
    • Clearer threat information through CyberSecure Enhanced
    • Matter and Thread visibility for smart building devices
    • Immediate alerts when a new device joins the network

These improvements are particularly relevant to businesses running several UniFi switches and access points, managing multiple sites or connecting increasing numbers of cameras, sensors and other smart devices.

Why does UniFi Network 11 matter to London businesses?

Modern businesses rely on their network for far more than internet access.

Cloud applications, Microsoft Teams calls, card payments, CCTV, door-entry systems, VoIP phones and business-critical devices may all depend on the same infrastructure. A network problem can therefore affect several parts of the operation at once.

UniFi Network 11 focuses on two areas that matter enormously in this environment: visibility and resilience.

The ability to see traffic in real time can shorten the time it takes to identify a fault. Smarter routing and backup connectivity can also help keep important services available when the primary connection is unstable.

Before upgrading, it is worth having your hardware and configuration reviewed. Several of Network 11’s new capabilities also overlap with our IT security services for London businesses, particularly where network monitoring, threat response and device control are concerned.

Is UniFi Network 11 ready for a live business network?

Businesses should approach an early release cautiously.

At the time of writing, independent reviewers have described the available build as a release candidate rather than a finished general release. A release candidate is expected to be close to completion, but it is still a stage at which bugs and compatibility issues may be discovered.

For a test or non-production environment, trying the software early may be reasonable. For a live office, hotel, shop or multi-site business, the safer approach is to wait for the official release, review Ubiquiti’s release notes and check that any known issues will not affect the network.

If other improvements are being considered at the same time, our guide to Ubiquiti 2026 tech upgrades for UK businesses provides a broader view of the available options.

How does UniFi Network 11 support larger networks?

The most important change is not immediately visible in the interface. Ubiquiti has rebuilt the telemetry engine responsible for collecting information from devices across the network.

What does 30% more device capacity mean?

Ubiquiti says the new architecture offers more than 30% better scale. In practical terms, a UniFi console should be able to manage more connected devices before resource limits become a concern.

That matters if a business is:

    • Expanding into additional floors or buildings
    • Installing more access points or switches
    • Adding CCTV cameras
    • Connecting smart locks, sensors or displays
    • Increasing the number of employee and guest devices
    • Bringing several sites under one UniFi deployment

More capacity does not automatically make a network faster. It does, however, give growing environments more room to expand without immediately requiring a separate management platform.

    What is Time Machine topology?

Time Machine allows an administrator to look back through the network topology and see how connections have changed.

Instead of viewing only the current state of the network, the administrator can investigate when a device joined, disconnected or changed its route through the infrastructure.

Independent testing indicates that Time Machine covers the previous 24 hours. That is a useful troubleshooting window when someone reports that a device stopped working earlier in the day but cannot provide an exact time.

For example, if a wireless camera went offline in the morning, Time Machine could help establish when the connection was lost and what else changed around the same time. This creates a more useful starting point than simply confirming that the camera is offline now.

Can UniFi Network 11 show network traffic in real time?

Yes. The Insights area now includes a Live view alongside its historical traffic information.

For devices connected through a UniFi gateway, administrators can see traffic flows as they happen. Each flow can show:

    • The application and its category
    • The policy that allowed the traffic
    • The internet connection being used

A flow can also be ended from the same screen.

This could be particularly helpful when an office experiences an unexpected slowdown. Instead of relying entirely on historical graphs, an administrator can look for the device or application consuming bandwidth at that precise moment.

Live visibility will not remove the need for wider monitoring and good network design, but it can make day-to-day investigations considerably quicker.

Does UniFi Network 11 improve internet backup options?

Network 11 introduces smarter routing and additional backup options for supported UniFi gateways. Ubiquiti has also expanded VLAN capacity, helping businesses separate traffic for employees, guests, payments, CCTV and Internet of Things devices.

One of the most interesting additions is WiFi WAN.

    What is WiFi WAN?

WiFi WAN allows a supported UniFi gateway to use an available wireless network as its internet connection. That wireless connection could include a phone’s mobile hotspot.

It can be configured as a primary connection, although its more obvious business use is as an emergency backup. If the normal fixed connection fails, the gateway may be able to use the Wi-Fi connection to keep essential users and services online.

Which UniFi gateways support WiFi WAN?

WiFi WAN requires a UniFi gateway with a built-in Wi-Fi radio.

Independent testing identifies the following compatible devices:

    • Dream Router 7
    • Dream Router 5G
    • UniFi Express 7
    • Cloud Gateway Industrial

Gateways without a built-in Wi-Fi radio, including the UDM Pro and Cloud Gateway Max, do not support the feature.

Businesses should check Ubiquiti’s current supported-model information before buying equipment or building a continuity plan around WiFi WAN.

Can WiFi WAN replace a dedicated backup connection?

No. WiFi WAN is a useful emergency option, but it should not be treated as a complete business continuity strategy.

A phone hotspot relies on mobile coverage and an available data allowance. Performance can change according to local signal conditions, and a third-party Wi-Fi network remains outside the business’s control.

WiFi WAN could keep a small number of essential services running temporarily, but an office that cannot tolerate downtime should still consider a dedicated secondary internet connection.

Our always on internet connectivity for London businesses service explains the available resilience options. It is also worth considering where connectivity sits within the wider recovery strategy, as explored in What’s Your Business’s Disaster Recovery Plan Post-CrowdStrike?

What are Network Lists for routing policies?

Network Lists can use an external URL as their source and refresh automatically according to a schedule.

This could help administrators keep routing policies, firewall rules and VPN resources current without repeatedly editing lists by hand.

However, an automatically updated external source introduces its own risk. If that source changes unexpectedly, network traffic could be handled differently without an administrator making a direct change inside UniFi.

Businesses should therefore use only trusted sources, monitor updates and document which policies depend on externally maintained lists.

How does UniFi Network 11 improve SD-WAN?

For businesses operating from more than one location, Network 11 brings performance-based SD-WAN routing to Site Manager.

SD-WAN helps an organisation manage traffic across different internet connections and sites. Instead of sending everything through a fixed route regardless of performance, the network can make routing decisions based on current conditions and business policies.

    How does performance-based routing work?

An administrator defines the required service levels, such as acceptable latency or packet loss. UniFi can then steer traffic across available connections and hubs according to those targets.

If one connection begins to perform poorly, suitable traffic can be moved to a healthier route before the problem becomes obvious to users.

Network 11 also allows more control over failover and application-based routing. A business could, for example:

    • Send Microsoft Teams calls over the most stable line
    • Direct large cloud backups through a secondary connection
    • Keep card-payment traffic on the most reliable available route

The exact policies should reflect the organisation’s priorities. A configuration that suits a creative agency transferring large media files may not suit a retailer depending on reliable payment processing.

Which businesses benefit most from UniFi SD-WAN?

SD-WAN is most valuable to organisations with multiple locations or more than one internet connection.

    That can include:

    • Hospitality groups
    • Retail chains
    • Multi-site professional services firms
    • Warehouses and logistics operations
    • Businesses with a London head office and regional branches

Central management can also help reduce configuration drift, where one site gradually ends up with different routing, security or access policies from the rest of the organisation.

    What is CyberSecure Enhanced?

CyberSecure is a paid UniFi security subscription. It adds intrusion detection and prevention using Proofpoint threat intelligence, together with enhanced content filtering powered by Cloudflare.

In Network 11, matched threats are accompanied by clearer information about their scope, risk and potential impact. The platform also provides practical response information, while Ubiquiti says threat signatures are updated daily.

This is important because a technical alert without context can be difficult to prioritise. A clearer explanation can help an administrator understand whether an alert needs immediate investigation or can be dealt with as part of routine maintenance.

Does CyberSecure Enhanced replace managed security monitoring?

No. A clearer security alert is useful only if someone reviews it, determines its significance and takes appropriate action.

CyberSecure Enhanced can improve the quality of information available to an administrator, but it does not remove the need for security ownership, escalation procedures or out-of-hours monitoring.

Businesses that need continuous oversight should consider a monitored detection and response service. Our MDR services in London provide round-the-clock threat detection and response beyond the network gateway.

    Are there data-protection considerations?

    Potentially.

The new threat explanations are described as AI-assisted, but Ubiquiti’s announcement does not specify where all associated processing takes place.

An organisation with strict UK GDPR, contractual or data-residency requirements should establish what information is processed, where it is processed and which suppliers are involved before enabling the feature.

This is especially important for regulated organisations or businesses handling sensitive personal, financial or professional information. The precise position should be confirmed against Ubiquiti’s current technical and privacy documentation rather than assumed from the product announcement alone.

What does Matter-aware mean in UniFi Network 11?

Network 11 can display Matter smart devices connected to the network.

Matter is a connectivity standard used by a growing range of smart devices. In a business setting, these devices might include sensors, lighting controls, locks and other building systems.

UniFi does not replace an existing Matter controller such as Apple Home, Google Home or Home Assistant. It works alongside the controller and provides additional network visibility.

For supported devices, administrators may be able to see information including:

    • Battery life
    • Firmware version
    • Signal strength
    • How the device connects to the network

This gives IT teams a more complete picture of smart building devices without requiring every connectivity problem to be investigated in a separate system.

Can UniFi Network 11 show Thread and IP devices together?

Yes. Network 11 can show Thread devices alongside standard IP devices within the same topology.

Thread is a low-power wireless networking protocol used by many Matter-compatible devices. Bringing those devices into the UniFi topology can make it easier to see how smart building equipment relates to the rest of the network.

Used together with Time Machine, this visibility could help an administrator establish when a sensor or another connected device lost its connection.

Instead of dealing with a vague report that a device “keeps dropping out”, the IT team has a clearer timeline to investigate.

Does enabling Thread visibility create a security risk?

Independent testing indicates that Thread visibility requires IPv6 to be enabled on the VLAN hosting the Thread border router.

IPv6 is disabled by default in some UniFi configurations and may also be deliberately disabled on an IoT network. Enabling it changes the network configuration and may affect the available routes and firewall exposure.

Before making that change, businesses should review:

    • IPv6 firewall rules
    • VLAN segmentation
    • Traffic permitted between IoT and business networks
    • The security and update status of the Thread border router
    • Whether smart devices actually require access to other internal systems

IoT equipment should generally remain separated from employee devices and sensitive business services. Our UniFi smart building solutions in London are designed with this type of segmentation in mind.

    What other improvements are included?

Network 11 includes several smaller changes intended to make security and day-to-day administration easier.

How do new-device alerts improve security?

UniFi Network 11 can send an alert as soon as a new device joins the network.

That may sound like a small feature, but it gives administrators an opportunity to investigate unexpected connections promptly.

    An unfamiliar device could be:

    • A personal phone
    • A visitor’s laptop
    • A contractor’s device
    • A newly installed business system
    • An incorrectly connected IoT product
    • An unauthorised device requiring investigation

The alert does not prove that a device is unsafe. It simply shortens the time between the connection taking place and the administrator becoming aware of it.

For best results, businesses should combine the alert with sensible network-access controls and a clear process for checking unknown devices.

Which day-to-day admin improvements are included?

    These include:

    • Bulk editing for clients, including groups, notes and blocking
    • Quick filters on the devices page
    • Channel plans showing the Wi-Fi channels permitted in the relevant country
    • System-log warnings about overlapping subnets
    • Packet capture on a specific access-point radio

UniFi can also create a custom icon when an administrator photographs a device using the app. This is not a major technical change, but accurate labels and recognisable icons can make a complicated network easier to understand and troubleshoot.

What should a business check before upgrading?

Because Network 11 introduces substantial architectural changes, preparation is important.

Before beginning the upgrade, a business should:

    1. Confirm that every gateway, switch and access point is supported.
    2. Identify and replace unsupported or end-of-life equipment.
    3. Create and download a full console backup.
    4. Export any historical information that must be retained.
    5. Review the current Network 11 release notes and known issues.
    6. Schedule the change outside normal working hours.
    7. Test Wi-Fi, VLANs, VPN connections, firewall rules and internet failover afterwards.
    8. Confirm that business-critical systems such as payments, phones and door access are working.

The backup should be stored somewhere other than the console being upgraded. If the only copy is held on the system being upgraded, it may not be available if the upgrade fails.

Does UniFi Network 11 support the original USG?

No. The original UniFi Security Gateway is not supported by Network 11. UniFi Network 10.6 is the final compatible version identified in the available information.

A business still using the original USG should plan a gateway replacement before adopting Network 11.

This is not only a feature issue. A gateway sits at the edge of the network and plays an important part in routing and security. Relying on unsupported equipment can create operational and security problems as updates and compatibility move on.

Will historical data be lost during the upgrade?

Settings are expected to carry across, but independent testing reports that historical statistics may be lost because Network 11 uses the rebuilt telemetry engine.

Businesses that retain traffic history for audits, reporting, capacity planning or investigations should export the required information before upgrading.

A normal configuration backup should not automatically be assumed to preserve every historical report. The business should confirm exactly what the backup contains and retain separate exports where necessary.

Can a UniFi Network 11 upgrade affect Cyber Essentials?

    It can.

Cyber Essentials requires in-scope firewalls and routers to use supported software and receive appropriate security updates. Continuing to use an unsupported USG or leaving a gateway on an obsolete software version could therefore create a certification issue.

This does not mean installing Network 11 immediately is always the right answer. The objective is to keep in-scope equipment supported, securely configured and updated within the applicable requirements.

Our Cyber Essentials certification service in London can help businesses assess their network before certification. Our guide to why Cyber Essentials is getting harder to pass in 2026 explains some of the wider challenges.

Do you need a UniFi partner to carry out the upgrade?

    Not necessarily.

A small business with one straightforward location and fully supported hardware may be able to complete the upgrade internally, provided it has a current backup and someone capable of troubleshooting the network if something goes wrong.

Professional support becomes more valuable when the environment includes:

    • Several offices or internet connections
    • Complex VLAN and firewall policies
    • Remote-access or site-to-site VPNs
    • Payment systems
    • Smart building and IoT devices
    • Cyber Essentials or other compliance requirements
    • Limited tolerance for business interruption

In these environments, the work is not just about installing Network 11. It is about checking compatibility, preserving the right data, testing essential services and configuring the new capabilities around genuine business priorities.

Our guide explaining what UniFi UK partners are provides more detail about the support a specialist partner can offer.

Is UniFi Network 11 worth the upgrade?

    For many businesses, yes.

The increase in device capacity creates more room for growth, while live traffic visibility and Time Machine topology should make network problems easier to investigate. WiFi WAN provides another emergency connectivity option, and the new SD-WAN capabilities are particularly relevant to multi-site organisations.

Matter and Thread visibility also make Network 11 more useful in offices, hotels and other buildings where conventional IT infrastructure increasingly overlaps with connected building systems.

However, the business case depends on the existing environment. A small and stable network may not need every new feature immediately. A company using an original USG, relying on historical statistics or operating a complex multi-site configuration has more preparation to do.

The sensible approach is to treat Network 11 as a planned infrastructure change, not a routine application update.

Planning your next UniFi network upgrade

A Network 11 project is a good opportunity to review the wider network rather than looking at the management software in isolation.

    That review might include:

    • Whether the gateway is still supported
    • Whether internet failover is adequate
    • Whether VLANs properly separate staff, guests, payments and IoT devices
    • Whether wireless coverage still matches how the building is used
    • Whether network alerts are actively monitored
    • Whether the current access points support future requirements

Businesses also considering new wireless infrastructure can read our guide, Wi-Fi 7 is here, your network is not ready, covering the UniFi Enterprise Wi-Fi 7 range.
