Multi-factor authentication requires users to verify their identity with something they know (password) and something they have (a phone app code or hardware key). Even if an attacker steals a password, they cannot access the account without the second factor. The NCSC estimates MFA prevents over 99% of automated credential-based attacks.
Speedster IT recommends Microsoft Authenticator (push notifications or number matching) for Microsoft 365 users, and hardware security keys (YubiKey or FIDO2 keys) for privileged accounts such as IT admins and executives. SMS-based MFA is better than nothing but is vulnerable to SIM-swap attacks and should be avoided where possible.
With Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Authenticator, a 50-person MFA rollout typically takes 1–2 days of IT configuration plus a staff communication campaign.
