Over 90% of successful cyber attacks begin with human error — clicking a phishing link, using a weak password, or following fraudulent payment instructions. Technical controls alone cannot stop these attacks. Regular, engaging training builds the habits that prevent the most common and costly breaches.
Effective training covers phishing recognition, password hygiene and password managers, safe use of email and the web, social engineering tactics (phone and in-person), safe remote working, data handling under GDPR, and what to do if you suspect an incident. Speedster IT uses simulated phishing campaigns alongside interactive modules.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommends training at least annually, with regular phishing simulations throughout the year. Monthly micro-learning modules (5 minutes or less) are more effective than a single annual session. New starters should be trained during onboarding.
Simulated phishing sends realistic (but harmless) fake phishing emails to your staff without warning. Those who click are immediately shown a short training module explaining what they should have spotted. Click rates typically drop by 60–80% over 6–12 months of regular simulation campaigns.
Staff training is an explicit expectation under GDPR (Article 39 for DPOs, general accountability principle for all organisations). Cyber Essentials does not mandate training per se, but Cyber Essentials Plus assessors look for evidence of security awareness. Many cyber insurers also require documented annual training as a policy condition.
