Backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery (DR) is a complete plan and infrastructure for restoring your entire IT environment — servers, applications, and connectivity — after a major incident such as ransomware, flood, or hardware failure. DR defines your Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) so you know exactly how long recovery takes and how much data you can afford to lose.
RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is how long your systems can be down before it causes unacceptable business damage. RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is how much data you can afford to lose, expressed as time — e.g., 1 hour means you can recover to within 1 hour of a failure. These targets drive the design and cost of your DR solution.
Cloud DR replicates your servers and data continuously to a cloud environment (such as Azure or AWS). If your primary infrastructure fails, virtual machines in the cloud spin up automatically, users connect to them, and business continues. Recovery can take minutes rather than days compared to restoring from tape or physical hardware replacement.
DR plans should be tested at minimum annually — most best-practice frameworks recommend twice a year. A test involves actually failing over to the recovery environment and verifying all critical systems work as expected. Without testing, many organisations discover failures only during a real incident.
Cloud-based DRaaS for a small business with 5–10 servers typically costs £300–£1,500 per month, depending on the amount of data being replicated and the target RTO. This is significantly cheaper than maintaining a physical DR site, and far less costly than the average ransomware recovery bill of over £50,000.
